Hawke Bay, bay of the southwestern South Pacific Ocean, eastern North Island, New Zealand. It has a generally oval shape, 50 miles (80 km) by 35 miles (55 km), and is bounded by Mahia Peninsula (northeast) and Cape Kidnappers (southwest). Its waters never exceed 600 feet (180 metres) in depth. The bay receives the Wairoa, Mohaka, Waikari, Aropaoanui, Tutaekuri, Ngaruroro, and Tukituki rivers. It was visited in 1769 by Capt. James Cook, who named it for Sir Edward Hawke, First Lord of the Admiralty (1766–71). Principal shoreline settlements are Napier and Wairoa.
