Natal, city and port, capital of Rio Grande do Norte estado (state), northeastern Brazil. It is situated near the mouth of the Potengi River on the Atlantic coast.

Founded by the Portuguese in 1597 near the site of a fort (Três Reis Magos [“The Three Magi”]), Natal was given town status in 1611; its cathedral dates to 1694.

Natal is the state’s principal commercial centre. Tourism is its major economic activity; the city has extensive beaches and sand dunes and a variety of hotels. Silk and cotton textiles as well as foodstuffs are produced in Natal, and it is a major exporter of fish. Natal is the seat of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (1958). It is also home to the Camâra Cascudo Museum and several football (soccer) stadiums, including the sizable João Machado, or Machadão, Stadium. The Marine Research Institute and the Barreira do Inferno rocket base are located in the vicinity. Railroads and highways extend from Natal to the interior and to coastal urban centres. An international airport is at Parnamirim, about 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Natal. Pop. (2010) 803,739.
