bristlemouth, also called lightfish, (family Gonostomatidae), any of the approximately 33 species of oceanic fishes (order Stomiiformes), occurring in tropical regions of the major oceans and characterized by luminescent organs on the undersides of their bodies. They inhabit moderate depths and are often referred to as deep-sea bristlemouths.

One genus, Cyclothone, is particularly remarkable because of its abundance in both numbers and biomass. Even though Cyclothone species are small (6 cm [2.5 inches]), many ichthyologists think the genus contains more individuals, and possibly more weight, than any other genus of fishes in the world, including the herrings (genus Clupea).
