São Cristóvão, city and port, eastern Sergipe estado (state), northeastern Brazil. It is located near the mouth of the Vasa Barris River, almost adjacent to Aracaju, the state capital. It is a port for coastal shipping, and its industries include sugar milling and distilling. The city was the capital of Sergipe until 1855. Colonial-era buildings include the 17th-century monastery of São Francisco, located on a plaza called São Francisco Square. In 2010 the plaza and its surrounding area of historic structures were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pop. (2010) 78,876.
