La Esperanza, town, southwestern Honduras, at an elevation of 4,951 feet (1,509 metres) above sea level in the Sierra de Opalaca. It was founded in 1848 adjacent to the Indian settlement of Intibucá and was elevated to city status and department capital in 1883. Some of the surrounding forests have been cleared for growing peaches, quinces, figs, and other fruits. Industrial activity in the capital is largely limited to fruit processing, the production of peach liquor, and lumber production, though the Indians produce fine woven blankets and wool cloth. La Esperanza is linked by highway to neighbouring highland urban centres and also has an airfield. Pop. (2001) 5,891; (2013) 8,124.
