Arāk, previously Solṭānābād, city, capital of Markazī province, northwestern Iran. It was founded as Solṭānābād in 1808 by the Qājār ruler Fatḥ ʿAlī Shāh. By the end of the century, it had become an important centre of carpet production. During the reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi (1925–41), the local name Arāk was adopted as the official name. In the late 20th century the city developed into a major industrial centre, producing steel, aluminum, petrochemical products, vehicles, and heavy machinery. Pop. (2011) 484,200.
