Nappanee, city, Elkhart county, northern Indiana, U.S., 26 miles (42 km) southeast of South Bend. Founded in 1874, it adopted an Algonquian Indian name (probably meaning “flour”) and developed along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. There is a large concentration of Amish farmers in the vicinity, and their horse-drawn buggies are a familiar sight around the public square; nearby Amish Acres is a resort and working farmstead that depicts the lifestyle of the Old Order Amish for the public. The city’s economy centres on the agricultural markets (mint, onions, grain); manufactures include kitchen equipment, mobile homes and recreational vehicles, and metal fixtures. Inc. 1926. Pop. (2000) 6,710; (2010) 6,648.
