Mount Darwin, town, northern Zimbabwe. It formerly served as administrative headquarters for the Tribal Trust Lands areas set aside for African occupation and is now home to the Makorekore people. Mount Darwin was probably the earliest site for European missionary efforts in Zimbabwe, and the Jesuit Father da Silveria met with a fatal rebuff there in 1561. The town is also an agricultural and mining (gold, asbestos) centre. To the southeast, Mount Darwin, named for the naturalist Charles Darwin, rises 4,951 feet (1,509 metres) above sea level. Africans call it Pfura, meaning “rhinoceros.” Pop. (latest est.) 6,313.
